I am glad you asked. In this paper we will cover how\u00a0to quantify and qualify the benefits of Agile and how do you go about implementing agile in your organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">First things first. The bad news; Bringing Agile to traditional organizations is not easy. It is really hard. It takes a lot of time and effort to make an organization agile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The Good news; Your team&#8217;s productivity goes way up and you make a ton of money when you become a fully Agile organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">To be clear, your whole organization from top to bottom needs to adopt the Agile way of doing business. You can&#8217;t piecemeal this process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Some executives try to take a middle ground and make the development team Agile. <span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><em><strong>Although this is better than nothing, you get the full benefits of Agile only when the whole Organization is Agile.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">What is an Agile organization?<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">An Agile organization is a lean organization that can respond to new events or challenges fast, almost in real-time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">In such an organization, decisions are made fast using the available\u00a0data. To make this possible, the organization constantly collects data on all aspects of its business, the competition, and the market.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">\u00a0The characteristics\u00a0of an agile organization are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Lean and flat structure; not more than 2-3 layers of management. If your organization has excess layers, cut it down to 2 or 3 layers max.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Rapid development; You need to adopt rapid product development. The shorter the time it takes you to introduce new products, the more successful you become.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Using technology to automate everything. Not using the technology to streamline your work is foolish.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">React fast to both internal and external challenges. Is Agile for everybody? Use agile to defeat them even if they have more money or resources than you do!&#8221; theme=&#8221;style3&#8243;]<\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">How\u00a0 to create an Agile Organization<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Recently Mckinsey &amp; Company published\u00a0a\u00a0 great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/organization\/our-insights\/how-to-create-an-agile-organization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article on this subject<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbesinsights\/2017\/11\/30\/5-steps-to-greater-agility-in-your-organization\/#10fcf375d9f4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forbes<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2014\/11\/bring-agile-to-the-whole-organization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvard Business Review<\/a> also weighed in on the same subject recently. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">In my view, you need to develop\/nourish the following\u00a010 traits, to create an awesome Agile organization:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Startup mentality- To become Agile you need to think like a startup. The sense of urgency, the focus on one goal, and each member wearing multiple hats to solve any problem.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Collaborative environment- Agile teams collaborate. Without collaboration, you can&#8217;t become an Agile organization. Using collaboration, the sum of the organization&#8217;s knowledge is greater than the sum of each individual&#8217;s\u00a0know-how.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Performance orientation- Members of an Agile team are evaluated\u00a0based on performance. The only thing that matters is the results. Traditional organizations have all metrics for evaluating an employee. In Agile only the result matters as long as no laws are broken getting there.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Flat and servant leadership- The old model of leadership does not work anymore. If you want a great example of today&#8217;s leadership, don&#8217;t look any further than Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon. The new leaders are doers and not rulers. They don&#8217;t issue commands but earn respect and command by being in the trenches with their teams. <em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you have too many layers of management, you are severely handicapped to be an Agile organization.<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Clear strategic vision- Clarity of goal and mission is the best enabler of success. Agile organizations have a clear, focus, and simple strategic vision. This vision is written down and viewable by every member of the team 24\/7.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Information Transparency- Agile organizations don&#8217;t hide\/restrict information to their members. Everybody on the team has access to the same data and information. This helps to avoid confusion or misunderstanding when making decisions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Customer-focused- Agile teams are focus on the customer more than anything else. As the saying goes, the customer is the king or queen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Continuous\u00a0Learning- An Agile organization is a living and growing organization. It strives to acquire more knowledge and know-how to do better and outsmart the competition.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Entrepreneurial Spirit-\u00a0Entrepreneurs take risks. Organizations that don&#8217;t tolerate mistakes and risk-taking can&#8217;t become Agile. In Agile organizations, it is ok to take risks and occasionally be wrong. The objective is to try and find better ways of doing things. If along the way, mistakes are made that are part of learning and are accepted as part of doing business. Your goal as a business owner\/leader should be to empower employees to make fast decisions when needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Lean\u00a0and flexible resources- In the traditional hierarchical organizations, resources are kept in silos and can&#8217;t be shared and doing things out of their job definition. This creates organizations\u00a0that have extra fat. So, how do you know if your organization is highly agile? or moderately Agile or not Agile at all? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.org\/learning\/library\/determine-organization-agile-scrum-ready-6129\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PMI<\/a> has written on this subject extensively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">To be a Highly Agile organization you need to have implemented the following 10 traits\/characteristics in your organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Every product\/project needs to have a product owner. Ownership brings responsibility and accountability.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Your organization needs to be collaborative. Without proper collaboration, your team can&#8217;t be agile.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Your organization needs to be customer-focused. By putting the customer at the center of everything you do.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Your organization needs to have a flat management organization<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Team members should be empowered to make decisions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Your Agile team needs to use technology to gather business data 24\/7<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Accept and embrace continuous product improvement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Implement a time box approach. Set fixed deadlines for delivering products and keep the scope flexible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Set many milestones during the product lifecycle and make sure each milestone is measurable and tangible. Each milestone needs to be a step toward the final product delivery.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Create a transparent work environment. Everybody&#8217;s work should be known and visible to everybody on the team. The project manager should have the same view as the CEO or any other stakeholder in the project\/product.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">To be highly Agile, your organization needs at least 8 of the above traits. If you have implemented\u00a05 out 10 of the above recommendations your organization is moderately Agile. Anything less makes your team, not an Agile team.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">If your organization is not already Agile, you better hurry up and make the changes needed to become one. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">If you still asking why Agile? Just remember what Amazon is doing to retail companies and what Google and Facebook are doing to publishers and newspapers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">So the questions should not be why Agile, but how to go the agile route.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">To survive you need to adapt to change and adapt soon. I can think of few industries that the Agile approach will not affect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Health and defense industry plus\u00a0government agencies don&#8217;t feel the heat of Agile behind them.
