We published\u00a0our findings\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/2016\/06\/how-many-project-managers-in-the-world\/\">here<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">For 2018 we have done a much more comprehensive study of the project manager&#8217;s profession. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Specifically, we wanted to know what PMs feel about their professions, their salaries and which methods they use at work, and what issues keep them awake at night. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">We also wanted to know if there is a salary gap between male and female project managers and how female project managers feel about their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">To find out, we created a detailed survey\u00a0to answer the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">How many project managers are there in the world?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The Project managers&#8217; Gender?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">What is the Project managers&#8217; age?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Where do they live and work?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">What Salaries that female project manager make?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">What Salaries that male project managers make?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Which industries project managers work for?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">What level of satisfaction do they have with their jobs?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">What issue do they face at work?\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">What methodologies do they use for their projects?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">What is the Project Managers&#8217; educational background?\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">We used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pmi.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PMI<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/glassdoor.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glassdoor<\/a> as resources to find answers to our questions. We also surveyed 1080 project managers in the USA, UK, Europe, Israel, India, and Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The result of this study is published here for the benefits of project managers and the companies they work for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">We are still going through the data we have collected. We will update this report as we gain more insight as to how the PMs work and the issues they face in their work.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">How many project managers are in the world?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">There are around\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000;\">2,220,000<\/span> project managers in the world as of January 2018. We found it very\u00a0difficult to find exact and reliable\u00a0information on Chinese\u00a0PMs with the limited resources we had.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">PMs&#8217; Salaries<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">As expected PMs in western industries make more money than other places. Due to the nature of project management, remote work is\u00a0discouraged and PMs stay at work until much later hours at night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Which Industries do PMs work?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">The origins of project management are auto and construction industries. In the PR and digital agencies, there is more women project manager than men.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">53%<\/span> of PMs in PR and digital agencies are women compared to <span style=\"color: #800000;\">47%<\/span> who are men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The situation is reversed in Oil and Gas industry. There are more male PMs than females one by a factor or three to one. <span style=\"color: #800000;\">75%<\/span> of PMs in oil and gas industry are men compared to <span style=\"color: #800000;\">25%<\/span> who are women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Which project methodologies are used?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">PMs use a wide variety of project management methodologies. Older PMs prefer traditional waterfall method over other methods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Among those practicing Agile, Scrum is the number one choice by a wide margin. <span style=\"color: #800000;\">64%<\/span> of all Agile projects use Scrum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">PMs Educational background?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Most PMs are highly educated and have college degrees. For this study, we did not ask if the project managers have a Bachelor or Masters college degree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Most PMs come from technical or business disciplines. As they gain management experience working on projects they move to managing projects.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">31%<\/span> of all PMs have technical degrees<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">40%<\/span> of all PMs have business degrees<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">25%<\/span> of all PMs have other degrees<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">4%<\/span> of all PMs don&#8217;t have college degrees\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/34.136.207.224\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Project-managers-education.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4785\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4785\" src=\"https:\/\/34.136.207.224\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Project-managers-education.png\" alt=\"project managers education\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Project-managers-education.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Project-managers-education-300x183.png 300w, https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Project-managers-education-768x467.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<em>PMs educational background<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The percentages of female PMs with college degrees is slightly higher than men. We attribute this to the fact that majority of PMs in oil and Gas Industry are men and in this area, in which fewer PMs have college degrees than other industries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Overall project managers are happy with what they do. Most see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/2018\/01\/project-manager-vs-product-manager\/\">product manager<\/a>&#8216;s position as a way to advance to higher positions in their\u00a0place of work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">The number one complaint by the Project managers is the lack of visibility and\u00a0recognition in their organization for the work they do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Most project managers believe what they do is very important and the data we collected shows that. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Projects which have a dedicated project manager finish on time and on the budget at a much higher rate than those projects which don&#8217;t have a dedicated project manager.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">In fact, for large projects, the success rate increase by 6<span style=\"color: #800000;\">5%<\/span> when a dedicated project manager is assigned to the project from the start of the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">I sincerely would like to thank all the project managers which worked with us on this study.
