They sound the same after all but are totally\u00a0different job functions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The product manager is responsible\u00a0for\u00a0every\u00a0stage of a product like development, sales and marketing and customer support after the sale. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">He or she has P&amp;L responsibility for the product and is measured by how much income is generated by the product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">A product could have many projects working toward it competition or improvements. As such one or more project managers could report to the product manager.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The project manager is responsible for a given project. At the end of that project, the manager could move to another project related to the product or to a totally a new product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The product manager stays with the product long after a project is done.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Below I have listed the responsibilities of each job.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 24pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Product manager<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Responsible for every phase and stages of a product lifecycle<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Has ownership of the product in the corporation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Helps to create the product specification and roadmap\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Controls the specification for the product, the budget, and the resources\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Has P&amp;L responsibility<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Directly interfaces with the customer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Holds the long-term vision of the product\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Has\u00a0one or more project managers working on the product<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Reports to the product manager<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Manages budget and resources allocated to the project<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Creates and leads a team, monitors and reports their activities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Chooses the tools and the project methodology used in the project like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/2017\/04\/waterfall-project-management-tutorial\/\">Waterfall<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/agile-project-management-tutorial\/\">Agile<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/2016\/07\/hybrid-project-management-methodology\/\">Hybrid<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Measured by on time and on budget delivery of the project<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">At the end of the project moves to another project either related to the same product or another\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 24pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">A product\u00a0manager acts more like the CEO of a product, or its mother. A project manager helps to bring one or more version of the product to the world, or a midwife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">A good product manager knows the value a good project manager brings to the product and strives to hire the best. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">After all, it is the project manager who is ultimately\u00a0responsible to deliver the product to the market on time and on budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">But this is the product manager who dreams about the product, natures the idea from concept to successful market introduction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The product manager makes sure the product gets required attention by the customer, by the press, and by the senior management.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is too much\u00a0confusion when it comes to understanding the roles of product manager and project manager.
