In fact, around 55% of all IT projects either finish late or never finish at all. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">This is an amazing statistic. Think of it this way, even with all the advances we have accomplished in\u00a0technology and work software, most of our projects still fail!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">To improve the project&#8217;s chance of success, it is important to understand the needs of people working on the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Without this understanding, it is impossible to plan and manage projects right and improve the success rate of projects.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Project&#8217;s hierarchy of needs is based on years of experience managing projects small and large\u00a0with teams local and remote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">It covers\u00a0how the successful projects\u00a0are planned, managed, and executed compared to projects that fail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The most important element of any project\u00a0is the individuals that are working on the project. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">When the individual&#8217;s needs in the project are met, the team&#8217;s needs are better met and it becomes whole and more efficient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">It is paramount importance that the needs of the team are well understood and taken care off before the project starts and during the project life cycle. There is no project without a team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">I have explained this theory from bottom up in this article to help the reader better follow\u00a0the needs of the project and its team from the start to the finish.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Project&#8217;s Hierarchy of needs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The picture below shows project&#8217;s hierarchy\u00a0of needs which is based on Maslow&#8217;s diagram and is adapted for teams and projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/34.136.207.224\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Project-Hierachy-of-Needs.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4612\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4612\" src=\"https:\/\/34.136.207.224\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Project-Hierachy-of-Needs.jpg\" alt=\"Project's Hierarchy of needs\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Project-Hierachy-of-Needs.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Project-Hierachy-of-Needs-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Project-Hierachy-of-Needs-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Purpose Needs\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Before a project starts it needs a clear purpose.\u00a0The management needs to provide a\u00a0precise definition of the project&#8217;s goals and requirement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">What is the target that the team is marching too? How is success defined? How the product or service should look like\u00a0when it is presented to the customer? What are the pains the product or service is designed to remedy? Who is the target customer?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">When the above questions are answered, the team has a laser focus on what they need to achieve to proclaim the project a success.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Resource Needs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Every project has needs and requires resources, be it the human\u00a0resource, equipment, a place\u00a0to meet and work and travel expenses etc. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Without\u00a0these resources, the project can&#8217;t start nor can it finish successfully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Experience has shown that the projects which are not properly staffed and not enough resources allocated to them are bound to finish late or fail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">After the project goals are defined and before the project can start, the project manager&#8217;s first job is to come up with a resource plan for the duration of the project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Teamwork needs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">A group of people gathered\u00a0together working on a project is not a team until they\u00a0collaborate, support each other and value each\u00a0member&#8217;s contribution. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/online-collaboration-software-guide\/\">Teamwork and collaboration<\/a> are essential\u00a0ingredients\u00a0for the success of any project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Teams that collaborate and help each other out have a much higher chance of success than those who don&#8217;t. It is absolutely true that project&#8217;s success is compounded when team members collaborate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Individuals need to have a\u00a0sense of belonging to be productive. This is only possible when the team works in a nurturing, collaborative, and safe environment\u00a0at work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Team Pride needs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Human&#8217;s are most efficient at their jobs when they like\u00a0their jobs and have a pride and purpose in what they do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Team satisfaction\u00a0is drawn from individual team members satisfaction. When every member of the team feels pride in what the do and what they accomplish, the team is at its peak performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">For teams to be proud of they are working on, they need to believe that the product or service they are working on has great value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">To enforce team pride the project&#8217;s and business objectives should match. It is very hard for a team to feel proud and secure when the business backing is lacking and the team feels the project&#8217;s future is not assured.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Success<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The ultimate goal of the project is to provide value\u00a0for the company, the society or a group or people who will use the product or service. Success has a higher chance of happening when all the needs mentioned before in the Projects&#8217; s Hierarchy\u00a0of needs are met.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The success could be measured by\u00a0a great product shipped, the money made for the company or satisfaction of helping people to overcome limitations or problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">For the project to succeed, it needs to finish on time on budget. Otherwise, the success is only partial even if the product or service is shipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Final Thoughts<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">The project&#8217;s hierarchy of needs is a work in progress. Due to the rapid acceptance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/remote-workers-help-bottom-line-expense-careers\/\">remote working<\/a> by companies large and small, this theory needs to be updated periodically to\u00a0adjust to changes happening in the workplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">I am looking forward to hearing reader&#8217;s feedback regarding this subject.
