{"id":2966,"date":"2016-12-05T15:02:25","date_gmt":"2016-12-05T15:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/?p=2966"},"modified":"2016-12-05T15:02:25","modified_gmt":"2016-12-05T15:02:25","slug":"good-reason-everyone-hates-microsoft-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/good-reason-everyone-hates-microsoft-project\/","title":{"rendered":"There is a good reason why everyone hates Microsoft Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two things people say about Microsoft Project. \u00a0\u00a0Microsoft Project is the industry standard for project management software. \u00a0And everyone hates Microsoft Project. \u00a0\u00a0Although there have been some declines in market share for Microsoft Project, it is still the dominant solution in the marketplace. \u00a0The gold standard. \u00a0\u00a0The 1,000-pound gorilla. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article explains the success of Microsoft Project and explores how the growth of online project management software is altering Microsoft\u2019s market position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, how did this happen? \u00a0\u00a0A long time ago, corporate America relied exclusively on Microsoft for both the Desktop Operating System and Business Productivity Software. \u00a0\u00a0Multi-year volume licensing agreements resulted in centralized purchasing and decision making. \u00a0\u00a0For many organizations, the decision was not whether to use Microsoft Project. \u00a0Project was the default for Project Management and the only decision that was required at an organization level was how many licenses to include in the Microsoft contract. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big line items in a Microsoft licensing agreement are Windows and Office. \u00a0\u00a0Project is typically a rounding error in the procurement negotiations. \u00a0\u00a0As a result, Project slipped through the back door into the workplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft Project remained under the radar for many years. \u00a0Sure, there is a significant expense when one considers the licensing mix required to support Project (Project Server and Project Client Access License, plus associated licenses for SQL, SharePoint and Windows Server). \u00a0\u00a0At the same time, the cost and complexity of any Microsoft deployment are significant and Project is a relatively small line item on any enterprise-wide agreement. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In parallel to Microsoft\u2019s back door way to growing its Project footprint, there was little resistance on the part of project managers. \u00a0\u00a0Why? \u00a0\u00a0Because the perceived complexity of Microsoft Project provided a degree of job security for project managers. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fact that only the project manager was able to access Microsoft Project meant that the project manager was the gatekeeper for changes in managing deadlines and changes in scope. \u00a0\u00a0In the pre-Agile days when Waterfall was the only project management methodology, Microsoft Project was a reasonable solution. \u00a0\u00a0It was difficult to use, but not impossible. \u00a0\u00a0It was a bit clunky, but also robust. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/gantt-chart-software\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gantt Chart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feature was popular because it was an easy tool for the project team to use as the common project plan. \u00a0\u00a0Management was able to review the full project in one visual. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the last few years, the outlook for Microsoft Project has changed significantly. \u00a0\u00a0I will review these briefly:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The workforce structure has changed as more people work via remote. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Instead of a project team working in one or two locations, today\u2019s teams are more distributed. \u00a0It is not feasible or cost effective to purchase a user license for every team member in each remote location. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft Project is out of date. \u00a0\u00a0For large enterprise-wide projects based on Waterfall, there is still a place for Project. \u00a0However, Microsoft never adjusted its solution for the rapid adoption of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/agile-project-management-software\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agile methodologies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0\u00a0More recently, there has been growing interest in Hybrid Project Management which combines both Agile and Waterfall.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/2016\/08\/online-project-management-software-tutorial\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online project management software<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has become more popular. \u00a0\u00a0Online project management and collaboration tools are increasingly used in distributed environments. \u00a0\u00a0With online software packages such as Asana, Basecamp and Binfire, project team members can collaborate with their colleagues in real time.
