Collaborative Project Management is finally on the radar of many organizations.\u00a0 Well, I have been a practitioner since before Mark Zuckerberg went to Harvard (or maybe even high school).\u00a0 In the old days, we simply called it Project Management<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0Now that we have\u00a0online project management software<\/a>, virtual whiteboards<\/a>, crowdsourcing tools, and instant communication that bypasses emails.\u00a0 It is time to give it a name.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Andy Warhol probably never managed a project.\u00a0But views on change are applicable to the adoption of Collaborative Project Management.\u00a0 \u201cThey always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.<\/a>\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Will the passage of time, the ubiquity of social media technologies and the entry of Millennials to the workforce bring\u00a0Collaborative Management to the organization?<\/span><\/p>\n

No. It takes commitment to implementation.\u00a0 It takes an investment of resources in new practices.\u00a0 It takes the selection of tools. These\u00a0are the building blocks of Collaborative Project Management<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Or as we used to say: \u201cPeople, process, and technology.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s look at some of the challenges (or excuses) that you will hear about why CPM adoption is hard.\u00a0 We will also look at\u00a0what you can do to address these concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n

Collaborative Project Management is only for Millennials.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>The argument is that Collaborative Project Management is for new employees entering the workforce.\u00a0Traditional Project Management is for everyone else.<\/span><\/p>\n

A more careful analysis is that collaboration is not only applicable to Project Management.\u00a0It should be part of the overall organizational culture.\u00a0\u00a0 This means aligning compensation to the adoption of collaborative practices.\u00a0 This requires that\u00a0senior management\u00a0must provide\u00a0sponsorship.\u00a0 This needs to happen before the words Scrum, Sprint or Gantt chart<\/a> software are uttered.<\/span><\/p>\n

The current Project Management methodology already works.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 If it ain\u2019t broke, don\u2019t fix it.\u00a0 We\u2019ve selected a Project Management methodology, we train our employees and are seeing the results that we like.<\/span><\/p>\n

The logic is correct but based on a false assumption.\u00a0 Collaborative Project Management is not a new process or methodology.\u00a0 It\u2019s about taking existing methodologies and infusing them with common sense principles.\u00a0\u00a0Tapping into the knowledge and expertise of the organization\u00a0to improve team performance.\u00a0\u00a0 Whether the organization has a tailored process of their own or uses Agile<\/a> or Waterfall<\/a>, Collaborative Project Management practices apply in equal measure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Collaborative Project Management tools are expensive that require system integration.\u00a0 <\/strong>We are ok with our employees engaging in open dialog and sharing information widely, but we don\u2019t see a need for even more tools.<\/span><\/p>\n

If there wasn\u2019t push back from the business about spending on technology something would be wrong!\u00a0 At the same time, collaboration does not happen on its own.\u00a0\u00a0If you try to use free social media tools such as Facebook for team collaboration, don\u2019t be surprised if productivity levels plummet.<\/span><\/p>\n
