font-size: 18pt;\">How do you keep telecommuters from watching The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Although it\u2019s still a little too early to eulogize the corporate office, telecommuting is on the rise.\u00a0\u00a0 According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/atus.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>, almost 23% of workers performed some or all of their jobs at home.\u00a0 And that\u2019s not all.\u00a0 There is a myriad of data that shows businesses saving money and benefiting from higher employee productivity from this trend.\u00a0\u00a0 When it comes to startups short on resources, it is often easier to hire people in remote locations who work virtually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Now before you celebrate with a Starbucks Peppermint\u00a0Mocha Frappuccino (assuming you also work via remote), let\u2019s take a detour and figure out if all this is really good for your business.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019ll put this a different way:\u00a0 for every worker putting in a 12 hour day and not wasting time in the coffee room there is someone else watching the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills also known as RHOBH.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">I know that the statistics tell us otherwise, but as someone who has managed projects for both multinationals and startups while working via remote, I have come to a (startling) conclusion:\u00a0 not everyone should work from home!\u00a0\u00a0 If this is the most obvious thing that you have read today, I wouldn\u2019t blame you if you stopped reading now.\u00a0\u00a0 But if you want to figure out <em>which<\/em> employees should work from home and <em>how<\/em> you should manage them, then you have come to the right place.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>What traits make a team member suitable for remote project work?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Let\u2019s start with who makes the ideal work-from-home candidate.\u00a0\u00a0 Based on my experience about 25% of employees can work at home effectively.\u00a0 When it comes to Collaborative Project Management, the good news is that there are only two things to look for when selecting the remote worker.\u00a0 One, their level of motivation; and two their ability to collaborate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Table 1:\u00a0 Remote Project Management Matrix<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2354 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/34.136.207.224\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Motivation.png\" alt=\"framework for selecting project management tool\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Motivation.png 529w, https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Motivation-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">In Table 1, I have categorized workers based on both motivation and collaboration, resulting in four types of employees:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>High Collaboration\/High Motivation:<\/strong>\u00a0 Simply stated, these are the folks that you want to work on your project.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As a practitioner of Collaborative Project Management, I\u2019ve decided to call this group \u201cCollaborative Project Management\u201d because these guys can work independently with little supervision and also contribute to the group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Low Collaboration\/High Motivation:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Employees in this category can work from home and do a good job.\u00a0 But, if you include them in a project don\u2019t expect them to add to the group.\u00a0 Sometimes you need someone who excels in a discipline and requires little supervision.\u00a0\u00a0 We call these people \u201cIndividual Contributors.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Some of my best programmers fall into this category \u2013 they get the job done on time but they work alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>High Collaboration\/Low Motivation:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you find yourself managing a team member who understands collaboration but does not show motivation then he or she will require management oversight.\u00a0\u00a0 Employees in the \u201cSupervised Project Management\u201d category can make a contribution to the group but should not work via remote.\u00a0\u00a0 These people will need support and guidance from the Project Manager.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Low Collaboration\/Low Motivation:\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The \u201cSupervised Task Management\u201d category is comprised of people who do not add to the group and also require close supervision.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Keep these employees in your line of vision and away from the home office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>How to manage your remote workers?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Let\u2019s assume that you only hire highly collaborative and highly motivated people on your projects.\u00a0 You can stop reading this now because all your problems are solved.\u00a0 Not exactly.\u00a0 First, even the most self-motivated employees require supervision.\u00a0 Second, even if you are blessed with the perfect product or service, you won\u2019t always get the perfect team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Based on my experience and that of my team here are the most important things to consider when managing remote workers:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>There is no such thing as autopilot:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your job is to manage so don\u2019t assume that your team members are independent.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Weekly status reports keep everyone on their toes and is completely reasonable to request.\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry about the fact that you work for a startup where too much red tape is frowned upon.\u00a0 Employees are still paid wages and need to document the work that they are doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;
