{"id":1430,"date":"2016-02-04T13:37:01","date_gmt":"2016-02-04T13:37:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.binfire.com\/?p=1430"},"modified":"2026-02-12T12:51:53","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T12:51:53","slug":"harvard-business-review-is-wrong-on-collaboration-in-the-workplace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.binfire.com\/blog\/harvard-business-review-is-wrong-on-collaboration-in-the-workplace\/","title":{"rendered":"Harvard Business Review is wrong on workplace collaboration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><i>How a prestigious publication reinterprets the meaning of workplace collaboration to fit research findings<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">In the latest edition of Harvard Business Review in an article titled <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/01\/collaborative-overload\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Collaborative Overload<\/a>, academics Rob Cross, Reb Rebel, and Adam Grant dedicate over 2,000 words to the dangers posed by workplace collaboration.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">As a practitioner of workplace collaboration for the Project Management before the term even existed, it is clear that the considerable research into the topic was misdirected.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Perhaps because the workplace collaboration is so widely accepted and expected today, the HBR authors chose the holy grail of productivity as their link bait.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">(Full disclosure:\u00a0 I attended MIT in the 1980\u2019s but institutional rivalry plays no part in my analysis.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">I\u2019d like to give a few examples of how the article\u2019s authors misapplied the collaboration label and instead of identifying real danger, simply reviewed well-worn themes of employee productivity, time management, communication styles and setting boundaries.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">These are all valid issues, but unfortunately not closely enough related to the topic of the workspace collaboration to justify the article\u2019s bold title.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Let me start with what the authors actually got right:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">At many companies, workers spend approximately 80% of their workday attending meetings or answering requests from colleagues and not enough time on critical tasks that need to be self-completed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Productivity suffers from the \u201cavalanche of demands for input or advice, access to resources, or sometimes just presence in a meeting\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">(As a side note, when I started my career as an engineer with one of the best high tech companies in the Boston area, meetings were kept brief and focused by placing \u00bd hour limits and instituting a no-chair policy for conference rooms.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Some employees do not know how or when to say no and take on too much of their colleague&#8217;s workload.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">This can affect their own performance levels. Not everyone is good at managing their time and this can lead to burnout.\u00a0 As a result, management needs to plan more carefully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Being that HBR is HBR, the article is backed by extensive research and fun facts such as 3% to 5% of a company\u2019s employees are responsible for between 20% to 35% of \u201cvalue-added collaborations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">I was also interested to learn that Corning bases promotion to its prestigious research fellow position\u00a0using collaboration-linked criterion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Although I cannot find anything flawed about the facts that this article presents, even on a slow news night, they don\u2019t make it to the front page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">But that\u2019s not really my complaint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;\">By conflating \u201ccollaboration\u201d and \u201ccommunication\u201d, the authors get to attack the Sacred Cow of the corporate workplace collaboration.
